Our Very Last Day and Well Deserved Holiday Days
On August 29, 2025 we taught Vacation Bible School for the very last time. Peter, our driver took us to Chigumukire for our final day, our hearts swelled with emotions ranging from bittersweet sentiment to overwhelming fulfillment on our drive to the centre. As usual, the children swarmed our Timotheos vehicle as we pulled into the lot. Once again they all were eager to get high-fives, fist bumps and pinky friendships (pinky promises) and of course, we were happy to oblige.
We would only be at the Chigumukire Centre for half a day on Friday so we just did the Bible stories, Psalter/Text learning, and colouring pictures with the younger children. We finished up our theme of honesty and dishonesty with stories told by Carmen and Karianna about Judas’ silver and Joseph’s brothers selling him into Egypt. We were also once again amazed at how quickly the children at this centre were able to learn the Psalter and Psalm verses as they recited and sang them completely on their own to us.
Once colouring pictures were completed, we served snacks and sobo juice for the last time. Due to the large amount of children, this part of our day this past week took up a lot of time, but regardless, we got the job done. As it turns out, some of us are true Malawians, able to carry sobo buckets on our heads.
We finished our day off with playing with the children. The yard at Chigumukire was filled with jump ropes, football, tug-of-war, parachutes and colourful dodgeballs. A group of children were especially excited to teach us ‘Malawi Songs’ which we learned later were more like political chants. Our team also got the opportunity to visit the foster home and the Foster Mother which was very special. We were also invited to a closing by the Pastor where most of the teachers from the past week were present.
Soon it was time to say goodbye. Goodbyes are always hard, but this time our hearts were very full as we were able to recognize everything we’ve accomplished over the last two weeks.
We headed back to our “home” in Mapanga that afternoon. While we were relieved to be in cooler temperatures, one of us experienced far too close quarters with ants; they took over her bed!
We are currently enjoying our vacation days. We spent two days by Lake Malawi and are currently at Mvuu Safari Camp, and are having the best time so far!
Looking back, we are extremely thankful for the Lord’s providing hand over the last couple of weeks, God truly is good!
