VBS Trip 2025: The Journey Begins

We all made it to Toronto at 7:45am on Friday morning. When it was our turn to check in we had a bit of trouble because some of our luggage was SEVERELY overweight…one of our volunteer consultants, Kate, saved the day as she could take some heavier items back! With a little running and thankfully no line at security we made it to our gate a half hour before boarding.

It was a long 14 hour flight from Toronto to Addis Ethiopia. Some of us slept, some didn’t… 😅 We then landed in Ethiopia thinking we had 2 hours to chill but they changed our boarding time from 9:15 to 8:35 at which point we gathered all of our stuff and ran to the bus. We loved looking over the little houses and villages as we flew into Malawi. There isn’t a lot of cement roads like we are used to. Most of it was red dusty roads. We landed safely and struggled to manage 18 suitcases, 9 of which were filled with school supplies but we managed to fit them all on 4 carts. The Malawi people are so ready to help that when you walk out of the airport doors you are immediately overwhelmed by arms reaching out to help you push the carts. We found our ride, made it to our homestead and decided to go grocery shopping. After a quick sit down and meal prep we all climbed into the little pickup and made our way to the store with a stop at the cutest bakery you’ve ever seen!

We found everything we needed besides pickles and sour cream (which I would say is a win)!

We loved driving through the town and experiencing the people and the culture! We ate a hardy dinner, got to know our hosts and then started prepping for VBS on Monday! We are all very tired and are all heading to bed in the next 10 mins (it’s only 8pm). Thanks for reading our blog!
